スリランカのピドゥルタラガラ山: 島で最も高い山

スリランカのピドゥルタラガラ山（直訳するとストロー高原の岩）は、英語ではペドロ山とも呼ばれ、島で一番高い山で、中部州、ヌワラエリヤの町の北から北東に位置します。また、この島で唯一の超著名な山であり、世界中で 1515 か所しかない超著名な山のうちの 1 つです。超著名峰とは、1500 メートルを超える地形的プロミネンス (山頂を取り囲む最も低い等高線から最も高い山頂までの山頂の高さ) を持つ山のことです。ペドロ山は標高 2,524 メートル (8,281 フィート) (測量局によれば 8,292 フィート) の高さを誇ります。

ピドゥルタラガラ山の周囲には森林保護区があります。この森林は5年前の森林火災で被害を受け、約3エーカーの森林が消失した。しかし、その被害は現在、自然と人間の介入によって修復されつつあります。山頂がスリランカ政府とスリランカ軍の通信アレイの拠点として使用されているため、山と森林保護区の地域は超厳重警備区域に指定されている。

この山はイギリスの統治時代に訪れるべき場所として有名でした。記録によると、1897 年には、徒歩で 2 時間半のトレッキングを使用するか、馬に乗ってより短い時間で山に登れる道が存在していました。

山頂を目指す女性のためにセダンの椅子が用意されていたほどの人気だった。セダンは、当時主に英国とヨーロッパで使用されていた木製の猫砂の一種です。それは 2 本の長い木の棒 (ペドロ山で使用されていた椅子の場合、竹でした) の上に置かれた椅子で、平行した棒は屈強な男性が肩に担いでいました。一部の椅子には、彫刻が施された座面、日差しを防ぐフード、隙間風から守るカーテンなどの追加の装飾が施されています。これらは通常、西洋の高貴な女性によって使用されました。したがって、当時のスリランカの田舎における彼女たちの存在は、多くのそのような女性の存在と山への訪問を示しています。イギリス人にとって「ピドゥルタラガラ」という言葉の発音が難しかったため、この山には「ペドロ」というあだ名が付けられました。
