ゴールはスリランカ南部州の地区です。スリランカの 25 地区の 1 つであり、国の第 2 レベルの行政区画です。この地区は、スリランカ中央政府によって任命された地区書記官(以前は政府代理人として知られていた)が長を務める地区事務局によって管理されています。
面積は 1,652 km2 (638 平方マイル) で、35 km2 (14 平方マイル) が水域、1,617 km2 (624 平方マイル) が陸地です。ゴール地区は北はベンタラ川、南と西はインド洋、東はマータラ地区とラトナプラ地区に囲まれています。ゴール地区の地形には多くの反対意見があります。ヒニドゥマ・パトゥワの気候条件は、スリランカの中央丘陵地帯に非常によく似ています。この地域は熱帯雨林で構成されており、ゴール地区を流れるほとんどの川や湖の集水域となっています。シンハラジャ森林保護区もその 1 つです。ゴール地区は温帯気候帯にあります。
年間降水量は2000~2500mmです。ジン川 (「ジン ガンガ」) は、ヒニドゥマ パトゥワのゴンガラの丘から始まり、113 km (70 マイル) もの長い旅を続けます。ネルワ、タワラマ、ナゴダ バッデガマ、テリカダ地域を通過します。川は 922 平方キロメートル (356 平方マイル) の広さの土地に栄養を与えています。ゴール地区のギントータ地区でインド洋に流れます。マドゥ ガンガ川はポラトゥ カンダから始まり、バラピティヤから海に流れ、ゴール地区の生態学的バランスの維持に役立っています。
古代スリランカでは、ゴール地区は南部州の首都として敵との戦いにおいて重要な場所を確保しました。古代の伝説によると、AC 1072 年にヴィジャヤバフ 1 世がヒニドゥム パトゥのタンバラガムワで「ソリ」との戦いを開始しました。伝説によると、ダンバデニヤ・パラクラマバフ王の治世中、彼の戦闘要員であるスガラ女王をゴール地区で処刑したという。ゴールはマハ・パラクラマバフ王の治世中非常に重要な地域であり、オランダ人、ポルトガル人、イギリス人が王国を設立するのに大いに役立ちました。
ゴールは「ギムハティタ」と呼ばれていました。シンハラ語の「ガーラ」という発音は、「ガラ」(石)という言葉に由来しています。ガラとは牛車の集合場所を意味します。この地区には大きな岩や丘があったため、後に「ガーラ」と発音されるようになりました。
ゴール地区出身の多くの人々がシンハラ文学に多大な貢献をしてきました。トータガムワ ヴィジャヤバ ピリヴェナはコッテ時代の有名な教育機関であり、多くの著名な学者を輩出しました。ヒッカドゥウェ・スリ・スマンガラ・テラ、ミゲトゥワッテ・グナナンダ・テラ、マーティン・ウィクラマシンハ、ナンダダサ・コダゴダ、エドウィン・アリヤダサ、MBアリヤパラ、グナダサ・アマラセケラ、DJウィマラスレンドラ、セナラート・パラナビターナ、ATアリヤラトネ、アリヤパラ・グルナンセなど、ゴールの著名な住民が数多くいます。
ゴール文学祭には毎年1 月に 3,000 人がゴールに集まり、南アジア中から作家が集まります。
