マーウィーはスリランカで伝統的に栽培されている赤米の品種です。粒の大きさや形は、短く丸い品種から長い中型の品種までさまざまです。栽培されている稲の中で最も背の高い稲の一つで、最大高さ350cmにも達します。種まきから5~6ヶ月で収穫できます。 1株あたり15~20個の分げつがあり、1エーカーあたり約65~70ブッシェルの収量があります。マーウィーは、マハの季節に栽培される写真期に敏感な植物です。低地の湿地帯や中間地帯の洪水が起こりやすい地域で広く栽培されています。伝統的に、マーウィーには薬効成分が含まれていると考えられています。肥満、糖尿病、結核の治療や浄化の効果的な治療法として使用されます。科学的研究により、高レベルのタンパク質と抗酸化物質の証拠が発見されました。さらに、鉄と亜鉛の優れた供給源です。
